Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare option which helps alleviate the discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse and many chronic pain conditions.

Simply put, Massage Therapy treats pain and dysfunction throughout the body, creating positive changes in muscle tone, general flexibility and circulation.  It involves techniques such as a deep tissue, myofascial and trigger point therapy, combined with educational and remedial exercises to improve body mechanics and overall health.

Regular massage is also an excellent way to reduce the day-to-day stress and tension, while increasing feelings of tranquility, energy and vitality.  Allowing you to Live Your Best Life!

What should I expect during my first massage visit?

I will require you to fill out a health history form. I may also ask more in-depth questions to establish which areas you would like focused on, or if there are any specific conditions needing to be addressed. It is important to list all health concerns and medication so that I can adapt your session to your specific needs without causing any harm. It is also important to specify any allergies so that I may adjust the oil or cream being used during your visit.  At subsequent visits you will be required to advise on any changes in your health, medications or if there any injuries I am not aware of.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to the level you are comfortable. For a full body massage, most individuals get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable during the session leaving your underwear or another area of clothing on, that's fine. I will work around the clothes you left on as best as I can.

I will give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table.  Should you need assistance getting on or off the table, please let me know.

You will have a sheet to cover yourself with once undressed to your comfort level.  NOTE:  No area of the body will be uncovered until it is being worked on and all other areas will be covered.

Will the massage hurt?

This depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light, relaxing massage that doesn't probe very deep into the muscles, shouldn't hurt. With that being said, there is a 'feels good' hurt and an 'ouch, stop it' hurt. A good massage, even a really deep tissue massage, should always stay in the 'feels good' hurt range.

Pain can be an indication that the muscle is possibly injured or inflamed and pressure should be adjusted. Also, pain can cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective and deepest massage always works with your body's natural response, not against it.

Is one massage therapy treatment enough?

Yes, if you just want to experience massage therapy to relax. However, to have a long term therapeutic affect one treatment may not be enough.
Take note: massage therapy is most beneficial in both acute and chronic conditions, when used over a series of treatments and then followed up with maintenance or preventive treatments. (Acute conditions are recent, occurring within a week to a month, and can be severe to mild but are sudden in onset. This could describe anything from car accident to a muscular sprain. Chronic conditions are present for several months or years.)

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes, I require a minimum of 24 hours prior notice of a cancellation.  You will be responsible for the full treatment fee as noted in the Cancellation Policy.

Current Covid-19 situation and guidance of RMT's is that we are permitted to practice provided we follow:

  • The Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 Guidance for Home and Community Care Settings (additional directions to follow when providing care in a client’s home).

  • Masks are no longer mandatory for patients and RMT's during treatment; however, the proper sanitization protocol is always in place to reduce the spread of any communicable illness.  Should you not feel well, please advise so we can make the necessary changes to ensure both your health and mine.
